Day 293, Oct. 20: NBA? What NBA?

10 Reasons Why I Don't Care
If the NBA Season is Canceled
I used to be a big NBA fan, mostly as a kid in the days of Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, Pete Maravich and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, but as recently as the days of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. But it's changed for the worse in my opinion and if the current strike goes on all season, it won't bother me a bit.
1. It's become so physical, it's like a league for thugs.
2. It's lost the finesse of fancy passing.
3. The head coaches over-coach. These are the so-called "greatest players in the world." Let em play.
4. There are hardly any fast breaks. (See No. 3 for the reason)
5. A touchy subject, but a fair comparison: As some former black Major League baseball players lament the lack of black players in their sport, I lament the lack of little white United States-bred guards in pro basketball. Even Steve Nash is from Canada!
6. Poor shooting. Too many of the thugs just plow to the basket for a dunk and can't hit a 15-foot jumper.
7. Spoiled players. They get paid enough and shouldn't be striking.
8. Selfish owners: They take a high enough cut already and, rather than give more to the players, cut back on ticket prices.
9. Sad evolution of officiating. They're complicit in it turning into a league for thugs by not calling fouls on the overly aggressive defenses or charging offensive players. And CALL the travel!
10. It pales so much in comparison to the college game, it's pretty much irrelevant to many of us longtime basketball fans.
